Push Notifications

NeatHub uses your phone's notification bar to tell you about the things you need to know, and you still receive them when the app is not open.

In Simple Terms

Push notifications work just like alerts from any other app on your phone — when your milk is close to expiring, or someone replies to your comment, NeatHub puts a reminder in your notification bar and tapping it takes you straight to what it is about.

Notification Types

NeatHub currently pushes the following:

  • Expiration Reminders: sent on the day an item gets close to expiring, using the advance reminder days you set (the date attribute first needs its "Reminder" toggle on; see Expiration Reminders)
  • Community Interactions: when someone likes, comments on or replies to your items or your comments
  • Membership: when your membership benefits are about to lapse
What Does Not Get Pushed

Stock Alert send no push notifications — open the Follow-up page to check them yourself; official announcements do not use the notification bar either, they appear inside the app under Messages.

Push Timing

  • Expiration reminders are sent once a day at a fixed time, so they never pile up within one day
  • The notification is titled "Today's Reminders" or "Reminders within N days", with the items listed in the body
  • Community interactions are pushed the moment they happen

Enabling Push Notifications

  • Allow the app to send notifications

    The first time you open NeatHub the system asks whether notifications are allowed — choose "Allow". If you declined before, you will need to enable it manually in your phone's system settings.

  • Agree to the privacy policy

    The push service only starts once you have logged in and accepted the privacy policy.

  • Set the reminder conditions

    Turn on "Reminder" for a date attribute, and only items reaching that date get pushed. There is no extra push switch inside the app.

Not Receiving Notifications?

If you set up reminders but no push notifications arrive, work through these checks:

Check system notification permission

  • Open your phone's "Settings" and find the notification permission for NeatHub
  • Make sure "Allow Notifications" is turned on
  • Make sure at least one of "Banners", "Sounds" or "Badges" is enabled
  • Check whether Focus Mode (Do Not Disturb) is on — it may silence notifications

Check background restrictions

  • Make sure the notification permission is enabled
  • Some manufacturer systems require additional settings:
  • Lift the "Battery Saver" restriction on NeatHub
  • Add NeatHub to the "Auto-start" whitelist
  • Set NeatHub to "Not Optimized" under "Battery Optimization"

Check that the reminder itself is set up right

  • Does that date attribute have its "Reminder" toggle on?
  • Does the item really have a date filled in?
  • If you can see it on the Follow-up page, the conditions are already met
Tip

Push depends on a network connection. When the device has been offline for a long time, notifications may arrive late. The web version does not run on a phone, so it produces no notification-bar alerts.

Prefer Fewer Reminders?

  • Turn on "Reminder" only for attributes that really do expire, such as "Expiry Date" — there is no need for the purchase date
  • Keep the advance reminder days small (1 day, say), which cuts down on how early you are notified
  • You can also switch off the system notification permission entirely and open the app to check yourself

Use Cases

Food Shelf Life

Set expiry dates for the food in your fridge, get a notification when it is close to expiring, and deal with it in time instead of wasting it.

Document Expiration Reminders

Set expiry dates for passports, driver's licenses, insurance and the like, get notified ahead of time, and avoid issues caused by expired documents.

Community Interactions

After you share or comment in the Zola Library, you get a notification when someone replies — see Community Interaction for details.
